Dealing with Working Caregiver's Challenges

Welcome back! Are you looking for ways to meet head-on the challenges of balancing work and caregiving?

What's helpful are the phone calls.. checking on mom and dad or calling Capitol Metro to pick my mom up for a doctor's appointment, or call a taxi for one of them. A good resource I've found and will continue to look for us... but there's a cab driver who's also a concierge and he wants to keep you organized. He lives in CT but that didn't matter to me because he makes phone calls - that's it!

Charles Wachtel is a motivation and life coach, who has driven a cab for nine years and understands how busy we can get... especially working caregivers! So, he wants to help us out by giving us a friendly nudge when there's a special occasion to remember or we need a wake up call, have a flight to catch, remember to call mom's doctor, check on mom and dad, or help us remember to pick up the medication.

Wachtel calls the service a mobile concierge; his business is the Empowerment Express. Concierge services are one of the fastest growing industries, Wachtel said. But he makes it clear he is not an errand buy. Eventually, Charles wants to stop shuttling people around and make a full-time business out of helping them organize and motivate their lives! Charles can be reached by cwachtel02@sprintpcs.com or call him at: 860-593-8233. By the way, I checked his references... raving reviews on service and character!

Anyone else wanting to offer a service? We caregivers need it! Let me know... I'll include it/you in the WorkingCaregiver.com member package, after checking references.

I can relate to this situation. As a working caregiver for my mom, I always looked forward for help. My mom used to frequently forget her medication and her appointments with the doctor, so I started reminding her over phone at regular intervals. But sometimes I would forget due to my workload and feel guilty. So I researched more on caregiving and found medical alerts to be an interesting and helpful option. I signed up for an emergency response service. They would call my mom to remind her when it was time to take her pills as well as her appointments. There are many such companies available providing this service like Philips, life station, Responselink. I went with Responselink because they were the only ones who offered month to month contract.

When we work 8 hours a day, we are allowed by law to have a certain amount of break-time. But, when we care for our loved ones with physical, mental, or emotional issues, this is not always the case. I have at times over the years, functioned on less than 2 hours of sleep, taking care of my mother after she had had a heart attack. I was too scared to fall asleep, let alone leave my house. She was not bad enough health wise to put her in a long term care facility, but she was not well enough to leave her for hours at a time. I seen the above post for ResponseLINK medical alarms, since my mother is mobile enough to push the button on the pendant that she now wears around her wrist. If I need to be gone for extended periods of time, ResponseLINK also has a service that I can use on an as needed basis that will call her and remind her of meals and her medications. I have now had enough peace of mind to sleep a whole night, and even go to the park for a break once a day while leaving her at home. This is a much needed break for anyone caring for someone on a short or long term basis.
